Why
The Kalkriese Museum and its historical park are primarily visited by school groups and older adults. Young adults, however, often lack meaningful incentives to explore the site, especially the outdoor area, where little of the ancient battlefield remains visible. To engage this audience, the museum experience needs to be reimagined in a way that is immersive, emotionally engaging, and accessible on their own terms.
How
By combining a location-aware audio drama with augmented reality, the project creates a narrative-driven experience that accompanies visitors before, during, and after their museum visit. The story adapts to real-time context such as location, time of day, and weather. A minimal visual interface keeps users focused on their surroundings, while AR-activated markers allow them to explore digital reconstructions of historical artifacts in the physical space.
What
The result is a mobile app centered around Marcus Aius, a fictional Roman legionary who guides visitors through the park via a context-sensitive audio play. Across six chapters, users follow his personal story while discovering highfidelity AR versions of relevant artifacts placed throughout the site.
